common core math?
i,ve seen many negative comments about common core math as more of a nuisance than a learning tool. i remember the disaster of eliminating phonics in grade school. is common core math something similar? i know from experience that people love to reinvent the wheel. opinions?

Common Core math is not reinventing the wheel. Much of the bad press about it is misinformation. Some districts and teachers have implemented the standards poorly, but there is no new "common core math." The methods that are shown by many of the articles floating around online are old methods and have been used in the US and around the world for years -- they are not new to common core. Common core is about giving student multiple ways of doing a problem and understanding why math works.
I'm a high school math teacher, and I don't like the way some schools, districts, and teachers are implementing the standards. Some people have interpreted the standards and having to teach things a whole new way and if you don't do it my way and then it's wrong. That misses the point. I also don't like how testing companies have hijacked the standards to created more and more high-stakes tests for the students. The standards themselves are good.

I think some people are getting rich off of common core and that is all that they are concerned about. They sold a ridiculous idea to a bunch of bureacrats and they bought it hook, line and sinker. Common Core math is the most convoluted way for a child to solve a simple math problem that I have ever seen. Thank God my children are grown and I don't have to fight this. What was so wrong with the way generations learned math? Has it been determined that children are unable to grasp the way math was done in the past? There is no way that as a parent I would support this.

A horse designed by a committee is still a camel. A lot of teachers set around for hours coming up with this. When you tell a committee to develop core standards-this is what you get. Setting on a committee and brainstorming means leave your brain at the door. Therefore, common core has no common sense. Committee thinking(or lack thereof) become emblazoned into law.

I agree with Eric. I have never seen something so easy as 1st grade math made into such hell. Common core is the dumbest thing they could have done. It is one more way for Obama and his people to control everything around him. I understand the kids need help in academics but maybe the parents should try helping out for a change. The school can't be responsible for everything in a childs education.

Look I don't have a problem with teachers "teaching" new subjects. But teachers have a tendency to send homework home that hasn't been explained to students and I'm actually teaching my daughter not just going over results with her. I don't feel that I should know have to learn Common Core math because the teacher doesn't explain it.

Just worked with my grandson, a 6th grader, who was so frustrated. He said his teacher doesn't explain it well, but tells them just do the lessons. Can't say as I wasn't in the classroom, but reviewing it with him,
I told him just think of it as fractions [ratios].and find the common denominator to figure it. Alot is lost in the writing of the problem, so I told him to key in on the wording of "the 4 cups of juice and 12 cups of water" to find the ratio of one or the other and write it out. After a few problems, he was getting the understanding. Yeah, Im old school..give me the multiplication tables to memorize. Worked for me...but then I love word problems, too.

Obama - Holder - Pierson = Reid + Pelosi + Sharpton = -Michelle - Obama + Hillary = -Reid - Pelosi = Sharpton + Hillary - Sharpton - Hillary = Better Government = Common Core + Common Sense.

actually it just over complicates math making it harder and making the child more likely to hate it.
