What does this mean in computer science?

Sometimes when I get some kind of error message, it is followed by 0x and some letters and digits (for example 0xBAD117). What is that? I've been trying to figure this out. I already know a lot about software but I want to know as much as there is to know.

It's a stop error at a specific address in memory. Normally it's a message passed to the OS reporting system.
