Should You Tip Your Tattoo Artist?
Hello, I will be getting a tattoo tomorrow from a well known artist originally from France, but now located in Los Angeles. It will be about $1000 for a 5x7 tattoo. He charges $1000 minimum for any tattoo that is 5x7 and the price goes up from that. He is on tour now in my local city before he goes to Europe. Depending on what you want. He is normally booked up for a couple of months. Is it necessary to tip for a highly requested artist? Who also has some well known clients on list waiting list too. I would like to tip, but I will be spending my max. Thanks

The unwritten rule is tipping between 10-20% of the total price.
This shows them you are happy with their services and that they did a good job. He will not (or shouldn't) expect a tip, no artist should and its not a law. Tip whatever you want or can afford, he won't be offended as you have just paid him $1000.

I have 5 tattoos and I always tip.. 3 of mine cost between $180 and $220 and I have $50 for those 3. My 2 smaller ones I tipped $20. I don't think a lot of people tip their tattoo artists though because even though I go to the same guy every time he seems shocked and always asks if I'm sure about my tip. Just use your judgment if you want to tip. It's completely up to you.

If they are highly requested, it means they know what they're doing and they do it well. It's ALWAYS polite to tip your tattoo artist if they do a good job; usually 15% of the total cost for a tip for smaller works, and up to 20% for larger ones. So 20% of $1000 would be an average, polite tip. Figure, you're already spending a grand, 20% more shouldn't be such a shock to your wallet.

I am getting a tattoo later this month from a well known artist. My tattoo is going to be $1200 for six hours. I am figuring on a $250 tip and allowed for it in my budget. The way I see it, a tattoo is a service and you should tip like you would for a server or a hairstylist.

I wouldn't if I was spending that kind of money, but it's really up to you. If he did a really good job I would give him a little tip like 10 dollars, but I wouldn't tip him anymore than that considering how much he probably already makes.

of course you should still tip this guy… he's doing work on you and if you like it, then "compliment" him with the tip.
