If you are not clocked in, but not allowed to leave, are they supposed to pay you anyways?

My friend was called into work at 11 o'clock to cover someone's shift.

When she got there, she was told that they had enough people because someone was working a double. She was also told she needed to standby because they might still need her.

So, 5 hours later, she is still waiting. She is not clocked in.

Is there some law that says she has to get paid for that time, even though she wasn't clocked in and wasn't doing any work since they kept asking her not to leave yet (essentially wasting her Saturday).

Yes, since she was no t allowed to leave, she must be paid, even if not clocked in. Had she been allowed to leave with the understanding that she might be called back, then no, she would not need to be paid.
