Can a portable hard drive run for long periods of time without breaking?

I have a 500 GB hard drive that I wan't to connect to my TV, but I don't know if it can withstand 24/7 of streaming movies. My USB get's pretty hot when I leave it it for prolonged periods of time, so I'm worried that the hard drive might stop working after a while. Can I leave it on the TV to stream movies without it breaking or exploding?

Hard drives are made to be run for long periods of time. Hard drives do generate some heat though, so it is important to place it some place where it can cool. if you just set it on an open shelf of your entertainment stand, that would be fine. Just don't put papers and books on top of it or anything else that will prevent it from cooling.

It should be fine running for extended periods of time. Where I used to work, there were hard drives that serviced the entire plant computer system that ran for days without problems.

Put it in a cool place and don't leave it running 24/7 as that will definitely make it overheat.

It can run for a very very long time. I personally have a 1.5tb that has been running for three years straight. It's only job is streaming movies to my xbox.

I wouldnt be too concerned, it will die at normal time in comparison to other drives.

    Cheers and Good Luck
