Expensive Italian cars?

My son bought one of those very expensive Italian cars. They aren't my thing because I'm not into cars. Why are these vehicles so expensive and cost as much as houses? Is it the name you are buying? Thanks!

Italian cars are known for their beautifully masculine styling, amazing engines, and unprecedented unreliability. You are 100% right. You are buying the brand. you are buying the image associated with the brand. you are buying the car for the way you feel in it and they way people look at you when you drive it. The sound of the engine and the power will exhilarate you. The complete truth however is that they really are a wallet killer. everyday you own one of them something will go wrong. Look at alfa Romeo. They have one of the worst reliability ratings in the world for their cars, yet people buy them because of a complete passion for them. It is also a very patriotic thing in italy for people to buy cars from their own country.

Ferrari is known for having the biggest markup on the cot of making one of their vehicles compared to any other company in the world.

As i say. if money is no factor in the purchase of a vehicle like this, you will buy one. someone looking to get the best car for their money will buy another car with the same handling power and at a quarter of the price tag - of which there are many... you simply will not have an italian car or any feeling that comes with one.

supercars are expensive because a large variety of things.

first an most importantly, their engines.

where most cars have somewhere between the 150-250 horsepower range, a supercar has easily over 500.

not the problem with power (and just about anything else speed related) is that costs are exponential. a powerful engine is expensive. a slightly more powerful engine is a lot more expensive. now it's not just power that needs to be upgraded, you also need a clutch and gearbox to handle all that power without breaking. this means better engineering and materials which is costly. now look at the handling side. a regular car has a fairly basic suspension designed to soak up bumps and be comfortable. a supercars suspension is designed to give it the best possible grip in all situations. this means that the suspension needs to handle acceleration braking and high and low speed cornering as best as possible. this means taking the car out to a track and finding the best combination of performance and comfort. this is not cheap. now to handle all those stresses, you need a good chassis. this once again means that you need to do some serious engineering to find the best possible balance between strength and weight. in many cases this means resorting to expensive materials like carbon fiber which are too expensive for regular cars. all these higher material, engineering costs add up making the cars more expensive. then comes the problem of rarity.

a regular car sells thousands upon thousands of models. some even sell millions. that's a lot of revenue to cover the costs of development. supercars don't sell millions. this means that prices must go up to cover those higher development costs. in regular cars, lots of sales is a good thing because it makes the cars easier to repair down the line (parts are easier to find and more mechanics will have direct experience). in a supercar more cars sold means that the car wont be as exclusive and those people looking to buy something that stands out might not buy them this means that the companies often restrict their production runs to just a couple hundred. by selling less than 1000 cars they need to make up the costs of development and manufacturing in very few models. the only way for these companies to make a profit is by raising prices. so yes in a sense you are buying a name but that's not all of it. keep in mind that many people buy these cars for the name alone but they get the technology along with that name whether they want it or not. for many the performance, exclusivity and feelings that you get from these cars is worth the price tag. for others who might not be so into cars it's not. all that matters is that your son (or anyone else) isn't neglecting their family and loved ones because of a car or that they aren't endangering others with it.

They are extremely fast, everything is handbuilt including body and engine and all the leather is hand stiched, is a big head turner and performs excellent and feels and looks excellent and sounds absouletly amazing.. drive on for your self and then you will know why, and drive it fast.
