Why do religious people seem to innately distrust scientists?
There is no motive outside of truth.
If a scientist could disprove evolution, they would be one of the richest and most famous people on the planet.

That sounds good, but you know it is false. Why? Because Evolution is the only materialistically based idea for progression of biology. To prove it false would require accepting intelligent intervention from a non-materialistic source - which science is methodologically prohibited from doing.
Richard Lewontin Harvard biologist and geneticist wrote:
"Our willingness to accept scientific claims that are against common sense
is the key to an understanding of the real struggle between science and
the supernatural. We take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity
of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure to fulfill many of its extravagant
promises of health and life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific community
for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we have a prior commitment,
a commitment to materialism. "

No they wouldn't, they would loose tenure and/or other benefits of stature! Science is one of the most self policing fields of human endeavor. It is a priesthood with out a religion or holy text and those that disagree with the sanctity of the holy fathers (Darwin for one) are quickly penalized.
It was that way in Galileo's time and that is still the way it is! The mechanism may have changed but the results are the same.

Many of Maxwell's laws cannot be directly proven. However, when they work well enough to power your computer, creationists don't ignore them.
Now, you have evolution, which has way too much evidence, and creationists don't stop crying about it.

Do you realize how stupid that is to say ??
If it were innate it couldn't be because they are religious. What a mindless idiot.

When a claim conflicts with the Holy Bible word of God then someone is either mistaken or lying outright.
Now either that is imperfect mortal man who makes mistakes, lies and cheats - or perfect GOD who does none of these things
Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.
So whenever there is conflict, of course we always go with God. We are winners with him every time.
Psa 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Rom 3:4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.

Scientists want to know if any of their explanations are wrong.
That mind set seems insane to believers,
because it is a threat to the religion meme
that controls their thinking.

when someone believes they are saved from hell
little else matters to them

They dont. There are several scientists that have graduated from christian colleges, and religious people love them.

They're in denial. The truth hurts.

I trust when it comes to technological advances and stuff but faith is my own. Truth about that is only subject to opinion.
