What is the meaning of Amber? Polish Question?
I have always been given Amber necklaces by my Polish family and always thought that it was a Polish tradition and that Amber is a symbol of love and family. However I can't find anything to say this on the internet. I'm attending a Polish funeral soon and wanted to wear my Amber necklace because I wanted it to symbolise family and respect for my family. Could someone please let me know if they have heard anything like this, or the real meaning of Amber.
Answers from Polish people especially appreciated.
Thanks

My wife is Polish and I've never heard of that. I think you may wish to go with your heart and what you feel. Don't let your mind interfere with what you and your heart know to be right Hope this helps.

Amber is the gold of the Baltic Sea and Poland is one of the countries that lies on the coast of the Baltic Sea so it has always been important to Poles. I guess all Polish women have some jewelery with amber and all Poles know what it looks like and how it's created.
Some people use it in alternative medicine as it's said to have some healing properties. As this site in English says: http://fengshui.about.com/od/fengshuicures/fl/Ambe...
It is also believed that amber:
Balances emotions
Attracts good luck
Eliminates fears
Relieves headache
Clears the mind
Dissolves negative energy
Helps develop patience and wisdom
Pretty much the same things are said about amber in Poland. Also some people prepare 'nalewka z bursztynu' - amber tincture, which is said to help you stay healthy. You need some 'raw' amber to prepare it, not stones used in jewelery.
I have never heard of amber as a symbol of love and family but I guess it has become one in your family keeping your Polish identity.
