well, first of all, when you are in a debate you need to be very open-minded. You should understand the benefits and disadvantages of both sides in order to debunk their side of the argument. Think of what their arguments might be and have a strong statement to answer back to it.
GUNS
By the way your saying it, it sounds like your against people on the streets having guns. It is safer to have guns everywhere so that your defense against an large-scale attack might be prevented. However, in times of peace, people will abuse their right
to own and use guns. People will use them while committing a crime. Therefore guns should be controlled and be less publicly spread. Another reasons why guns should be banned is because young adults or teenagers might use the weapon for (bullying) threatening other people's lives for committing unlawful deeds or even for suicide.

You can make almost any political or social argument about what -might- happen if we do something you disapprove of. But in some cases we have actual history on these things.
For instance, every time we want to raise the minimum wage, we have some conservatives warning that it will cause inflation and higher unemployment. But we HAVE raised the minimum wage more than a dozen times in the last 30-40 years, and it's never done that! Actual history trumps warnings of what someone thinks -might- happen.
And that's how it is with guns. History shows that the more guns there are 'on the street', the more gun violence. The weaker gun laws are, the more gun violence. More accidental shootings, more murders, more armed robberies, more suicides, etc. etc. Looking at the actual statistics, it's impossible to claim that more guns make us safer.
In fact, if you own a gun to protect your home, YOU are more likely to get shot with YOUR OWN GUN than you are to shoot a criminal. This is not just me making up something bad that could happen, it's proven by actual statistics!
