Are most cables that fit, going to work?

I have a hard drive a friend gave me about 4 years ago. It's a toshiba one. I only have a serial number to go by S/N: 0306253774. At the time i tried it and presumed it didn't work but i left it. The other day i got it out and had a brief connection, but lost it. Presuming the problem to be the USB cable i purchased a new one. However when that arrived it was the power light that had ceased to function. Leading me to believe that it's probably the adapter that needs replacing. Now, the adapter i have with it is

Dura Micro Inc

Model: DM5127

Input: 100-240V~ , 50-60Hz 1.2A

Output: 5V= 2A

12V= 1.2A

S/N: D206032504978

They don't seem to be easy to find, however there are adapters that have the same bit that connects to the hard drive on the end and i wondered if that would still work or do i have to stick with the same make and model?

Thank you for your help.

    Any sensible external drive power supply should only provide ONE voltages and then create proper regulated voltages internally from that. Mostly now they either give 12v or 5 v only. Do NOT use anything except the right adapter, this is a dedicated unit for that drive. You might need to buy it from the manufacturer.

    As long as the adapter is 5v and rated 2amps or more you can use them.

    As long as the listed OutputVoltage is the same, you can use another one.
