According to what are movies rated?

I understand what all the ratings mean, but according to what are the movies rated? What are the criteria for each rating?

The short answer is: there is no hard-and-fast rule for how movies are rated -- they're completely at the mercy of the whims of the Motion Picture Association of America.

I don't know how things work in America but mostly in India the more the producers pay the critics, the more stars the movie gets.

See if you can find a movie called

THIS FILM IS NOT YET RATED

    It's absolutly scandalous!

Movie ratings are given by a group of SELF APPOINTED people.

Some retire and when they do, the others in the group APPOINT THEM!!!

Some directors get really pissed off because they are told their movie contains scenes that are 'unacceptable'. Thus they are given 18 certificates which means some movie theatres either refuse to show them, or give them a very limited run.
