Why are the US marines and navy separate?

Wouldn't it be administratively easier to have them integrated under the Navy? After all they work together most of the time.

They're really not entirely separate. Notice that the Marine Corps doesn't have it's own academy, their own medical personnel, etc.

The Marine Corps operates under the jurisdiction of the Dept of the Navy.

Marines are apart of the navy but the marines are a different branch I know this is confusing!

Source(s): My dad was in the navy and my brother is in the marines and I'm going to the army.
