Moving to Sydney?
Hi,
So I'm moving to Sydney quite soon and I just want advice/tips from locals or people who know a lot about Sydney to suggest some cool places to go - like your favourite restaurants (that maybe a lot of people don't even know about!), fun things to do on the weekends, the nicest areas (yeah I still haven't chosen where exactly I'm renting (it has to be near Sydney centre) etc. Just the best things to do, see and experience there would be great.
Please do NOT suggest stuff like luna park, harbour bridge, the Sydney opera house, bondi, coogee, Taronga zoo and so on. I know about all of the main places - I've been to Sydney quite a lot, I just have never lived there.
Thanks!

Sydney is a very expensive place most people kill boredom by creating there own fun get friends go out simple as for living I'm a expert there is not one suburb that has "nice friendly " people there are idiots everything but the best places to live without trouble are "west ryde , dennistone
, manly , coogee , abbotsford , kingsford , malabar, etc etc most of them you need to be cashed up but don't listen to anyone believe me when I say this it's all about your race.

Manly Beach is my personal favourite both as a place to live and great cafes and people watching... catching the ferry on the harbour is the best mode of transport be it to Manly or any of the other harbour suburbs
oh if you like hip cool markets you can't do better than Paddington on saturdays
in fact a lot of people do the markets a great day out Kirribilli and North Sydney were a couple of other good ones

this is a good one also there is a night food market which is quite a "scene" on a friday night in north sydney

get all the tourist "must do" brochures and every weekend tick off another from the list as often people that live in a place don't get out and do all the things that are there

As for restaurants, do you like Vietnamese? I discovered a place called Cabramatta, went for Yum Cha it was extraordinary. I went for supper there with my boss, the food was authentic and not expensive at all. We had a dish, one of many called Chili Crab, it was also excellent.
Now I don't know if this place is still there, but on George Street near Bridge Street, not far from Australia Square (same side), there is a small ally, and there was a great steak house. The price didn't bother me, not when the steak arrived to order.
In my final year of my assignment the first time, some friends I made gave me a tip, don't hang around the city, head out to the country, and they were right. there is more to NSW than Sydney. If your smart, it doesn't have to be expensive. My biggest mistake the first time, is I didn't put my passion to dive and see what the depths of the east coast had to offer, I was pleasantly surprised on my second Australian tour.
Used to love hanging around the Rocks on George St North, a few clubs I went to were St George Leagues, Parramatta League, Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL. Not to hang around the bar or the slots, but they actually had some good shows, and the Australian talent was very good.
A few of us went up to the Hawkesbury went out for the weekend on a house boat from a company called Holidays afloat., we had a ball of a time. But I enjoy being on the water.
What I am trying to say to you, I started to do the non touristy things. I went to places where you do not see many foreigners.

In Chinatown there are quite a few shops and restaurants that are secluded but in general the best way to discover Sydney is to walk around

Sorry, but Sydney is WAY too big to answer your question. You need to know where you will be living, and even then the things I enjoy are probably completely different to what you would enjoy.

Considering how f-ing expensive Sydney is, you probably won't have much money to spend going out anyway.
