behavioral intervention?

Say a student is having issues with off-task, out-of-seat behaviors. The real issue seems to be an 'attitude' when it comes to speaking with other students. If another student makes a comment or says something that is wrong (like a wrong answer to a question or a comment that isn't pertinent to the topic being discussed in class)....he will tell them (in a not so nice way) that they are wrong or that their answer/comment is dumb. When he's redirected, he seems to then just shut down and not participate in class.

What are some interventions that can be used to help?

Update:

He's not in sp. ed. but I didn't know of a better category to put this in.

Update 2:

@JMITW --- that secret signal thing is a great idea! I'll talk with his teacher about doing something like that. =D

Obviously you have a very intelligent, very BORED kid on your hands. That's why he's acting up, he's sick and tired of waiting for slower kids to catch on, so he's trying to shut THEM down so he can get on with learning something new.

The best answer would be to put him in an advance placement class, or even bump him up a grade so he will be more challenged. Keeping him where he is does everyone - you, him, AND the other kids - a disservice.
