Who's the greatest guitarist ever?
Your personal opinion and reasoning as to why, i'd be really interested :)
Mine at the moment is a guy by the name of Andy Mckee. My reasoning, he's an incredible acoustic guitar player with the ability to create percussion, rhythm and melody parts at the same time. Songs of his include Drifting and Rylyn. He also has awesome metal chops. Check out his cover of the outro solo on Innocence faded by dream theatre! Overall an exceptional guitarist who really looks like he enjoys playing.
So yeah! Love to hear a multitude of opinions! Hendrix? Chet atkins? Dimebag? Van halen? Yngwe Malmstein? Randy Rhodes? Who's your fave and what makes them better than the rest to you?

John Petrucci: He can play anything, fast, slow, melodic, atonal, doesnt matter, he can play it and creates some pretty crazy solos. Been a fan of this guy for almost 10 years and still dont get tired.
Eric Clapton: This dude, is the most precise, accurate, cleanness and best player at what he does. His stuff, specially acoustic songs, sound so good, it gives me eargasm.
and one of my all time favorite...Randy Rhoads. He made Ozzy songs interesting with his solos and riffs. on the early years, I think he set the standards for next guitarist and only Zack Wylde was close, but not exactly there. And then his stuff from Quiet Riot was also pretty good.

Johnny Marr
Bob Mould
John Squire

Alex Lifeson is the best around today. In both creativity and ability.Very little from the textbook.
Geordie Walker from "Killing Joke"is a close second.
One of the biggest innovators of modern metal and industrial metal.
When i hear of somebody else that sounds like him or is close i'll let you know.

Just Bang Your Head, are you aware that Page stole most of Zeppelin's hits from other musicians? Plagiarism does NOT a genius make.

I gotta agree with Richard. Brian May introduced unique triple layered guitar harmonies, created on his home made guitar “Red Special”, which has become his trademark over the years.
