Hypothetically, how many generations would it take for diabetes to become an epidemic and spread to everyone?

The number of people diagnosed with diabetes per year has been growing at an increasing rate. I'm writing a story (science fiction) so it doesn't have to be accurate because no one can really know. My question is how long (how many generations) do you think it would take for everyone to have diabetes? I'm sure it's unlikely that that will ever happen, at least in the near future, but for the story's sake, what do you think?

Diabetes is not contagious; therefore, it is impossible for diabetes to spread. It is possible that diabetes can continue to become more common. You can make up any scenario you want. It will become more common if a greater number of people became obese and stopped exercising. This might happen in a society where people just sat around indoors and ate food without having to do anything else.

Natural selection doesn't work that way, there would have to be a survival advantage to diabetes for it to become a dominant trait. Something like how frogs can allow themselves to be frozen through the winter because of high glucose levels.
