Why do theists care so much about what others do with their bodies?

I'm talking about homosexuality.

I get that you guys think its a sin and all but why is it you're business what gay people do?

This is like if one day I woke up and decided to go on a diet, then I got mad because I saw people eating donuts, so I tried to outlaw donuts.

Do you see how crazy that sounds?

Kamikaze has the best answer, because he directly addresses the theists who answer here. These two are trying to twist it around so it appears they are the sane ones, which is EXACTLY the point! Theists MUST see this as immoral or "imposed upon them" because they are so used to oppressing others. Gays, women, children, people they've enslaved, nations they've gone to war with, heathens, etc...

My answer is simple: Gay rights are one of the last places theists can set up a soapbox to defend their worldview. Science and mythology have made short work of all the others. When they latch onto this and make it a political issue, they can band together, thus gaining political and social power. Lots of people are homophobic (men mostly) for other psychological reasons. But their religion gives them "divine validation" to say, "This is wrong and immoral!" It's similar to what racist said not too long ago about affirmative action and such. They are too myopic to see that these folks DON'T enjoy the same rights as they do, so they must deny this fact by pretending THEY are the one's being persecuted.

And in the process, they maintain a platform to fight for the illusion of moral superiority. See how that works? Lame, huh?

@RoseThistle, Gay rights activists aren't looking for the public's approval for their choices, they are looking for equal rights and representation in the law. They do not want to be discriminated against any more than you or I do. As it is right now, in most states, gay couples cannot be legally married - why? America was founded on the idea of religious freedom - there should be no laws based upon religion restricting the rights of citizens, no matter what they believe or don't believe in.

@Ray, Gay rights will never trump the rights of any other group in our society. That isn't what the LGBT community wants. That isn't what women and minorities want when they fight for their own equal rights and representation. Gay people want to be treated the same as everyone else - not better, just the same. Every american citizen is born with the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. If a person cannot live their life as they choose, so that they may find happiness, then there is a problem - that is not being fair and equal. We must all learn to live together in harmony, and accept that not everyone agrees on the matters or religion and politics, but that it is not any one person's right to impose their beliefs on another.

Most Christians I know are not interested in other people's sex lives and believe it should be God and the consensual adults involved business.

Who keeps trying to bring gay marriage to the public for the public's approval and acceptance? It's gay activist groups that seem to need other people's approval for their own choices.

Your analogy is right on. They really think that they are the only persons who know anything about their bible, when in actuality they are the persons who know the least about the bible. They really just read and accept it, they never study and research it. Then they are guided by priests and preachers all trying to find something that they can call bad, yet they are practicing such things and worse all the time.

I think religion draws people who are prone to be busybodies. Religion gives them power to interfere instead of just nosing around.

All that you see about gay rights in the news is about politics, despite what the media tells you. Religiously, I reject homosexuality, meaning I will not partake in it and consider it a sin, but that is all. Politically, I fight against the idea of gay rights trumping the rights of others in our so-called "equal" society.
