Automatic VS Manual transmission?
Hi there. So here's the back story: I'm looking at getting a 2014 Scion FR-S sometime within the next month and I'm having trouble deciding between an automatic or manual transmission. The car is to be a daily driver, mostly for commutes back and forth to work. I don't experience much, if any traffic on the way to work. I do love road trips as well. I know how to drive a manual, I just have never driven a manual vehicle as a daily driver. My father is saying get a manual, while my mother is saying get an automatic. Both parents have owned multiple sports cars in their days, and both have valid points that support their choice. Part of me also wonders about an automatic, because it does come with paddle shifters and a slap shift on the actual gear shift. What I'm asking people is which transmission would you suggest, and why? I'd like pros and cons to your decision as well. Thanks in advance.

Personally, I have never owned a car with an automatic transmission. I LOVE DRIVING and anyone who drives a stick will tell you that it is just more fun to drive a stick. But since you know how to drive a stick, you already know that. I took a look at the spec's for that car. Wow. That would be a fun car to drive. I could not see getting one of those with an automatic, it would sort of be neutering it. Also, here is a true story that took place in our area a couple of years ago. Here is the security cam in the Walmart parking lot. There is the parked car. Here come the three bad guys. They get the car door opened and they all pile in. The car sits, and sits, and sits. The car doors open up and the bad guys get out and leave the car alone. Why? None of them knew how to drive a stick! Who would have thought that a stick shift would also be a theft deterrent.

I would suggest going with the manual. I've had several manuals and a few automatics with the slap shift and I never used the slap shift. After using the slap shifters a few times I realized that it was still nothing like a real manual. The slap shift has a delay and feels computerized (which it is). If you're leaning toward manual, don't let the slap shift sway you to automatic. It always left me with buyers remorse. I've never regretted the decision to go manual though.

If it is mainly for commuting, it is easier and more convenient to get an automatic simply because of the frequent stops and such. On a side note, there is less drive train loss on manuals, so there's that!

There is not much of an advantage to a MANUAL shift anymore! modern automatics are FUN to drive, and can SAVE ON GAS! If you have SHIFT PADDLES< then it would be a TIPTRONIC from the ZF COMPANY< and VERY EFFICIENT! ZF furnishes transmissions and steering gear to AUDI BMW, VW, BENZ, PORSCHE, BENTLEY, LAMBORGHINI, SEAT, and now JEEP< CHRYSLER< FORD a few GM cars, LEXUS< and INFINITI! THey are maybe the worlds LARGEST trans maker, and we have REBUILDING PLANTS here in the USA! They also make INDUSTRIAL trannies as well! WOW! AN AUTOMATIC is much appreciated if you break your LEG< like I did , in a serious auto accident, or other mishap! the CLUTCH on a MANUAL trans car is usually good for about 150k miels these days, and a TRANS SERVICE on the BEST automatics is abut a $150-200 FLUSH and FILL< dealer ONLY! TAKE YOUR CHOICE!

If there's low traffic/red lights/stops, manual is more enjoyable, especially on a sports car, since you feel your engine's power more and you have more control over your car. Also it has a lower fuel consumption and the car is cheaper when manual.

both options are good for different reasons but personally i would go manual. i found when i drove auto that i got a bit 'bored' and missed driving manual. i think u get more enjoyment from driving a manual and you have better control with it too.
