Man Utd v Sheffield Wednesday in 1993 - The folklore of Fergie time (extra stoppage time at Old Trafford games if the home team wasn't winning) was born, and in this they used it to perfection. Two Steve Bruce goals overturning a 1-0 deficit. Cue managerial cavorting on the touchline, and a huge step towards their first title in 26 years.
Man Utd v Bayern Munich in 1999 - Manchester were still trailing 1-0 in stoppage time in Barcelona, so cue two inspired substitutions, two goals within the last minute, and the first team ever to win the treble.
Arsenal v Man Utd in 1979 - No better place for a dramatic late finale than the FA Cup Final. Arsenal were 2-0 to the good, Manchester fought back to make it 2-2, and then Arsenal scored a late winner. All within the last four minutes.
Nottingham Forest v Spurs in 1995 - 0-0 at 88 minutes, but the game actually finished 2-2.
Man City v QPR in 2012 - The situation was simple, if Man City won they would claim their first League title in about four decades. But with Man City, it's never simple. They were 2-1 down at the 90th minute and Manchester United were winning at Sunderland and in poll position. Edin Dzeko equalised, and then Sergio Aguero scored a remarkable winner in the 95th minute, to give them the League on goal difference (in Fergie time).
Arsenal v Liverpool in 2011 - A lot of stoppage time to play due to an injury in this Sunday afternoon encounter. Arsenal took the lead in the 97th minute through a penalty. Liverpool went straight up the other end and equalised.....through a penalty.
Carlisle v Plymouth in 1999 - another straightforward situation. If Carlisle won, they would stay in the football league. Anything but a win and they would go down and probably out of business. At 90 minutes, the score was 1-1, but with 10 seconds left, they conjured a dramatic match winner; through the most unlikely source of their on-loan goalkeeper.
Turkey during Euro 2008 - in this tournament, they made a habit of stirring late comebacks, and in fact, only lead for a total of something like 6 minutes. None more so than their quarter final against Croatia. It was the most boring of games until the 119th minute, when Croatia took the lead. Turkey duly went straight up the other end, equalised, Slaven Bilic had a rage on the touchline...and Turkey won the penalty shoot out.
But the most dramatic late finale by a country mile:
Watford v Leicester City in 2013 - Leicester were leading my team 1-0 from the home leg of their Championship play off final. Late on in the return leg at Vicarage Road, the aggregate score was level at 2-1 on the day and 2-2 in total. Leicester were awarded a penalty in the 97th minute, and then the most dramatic 20 seconds in football, probably ever. A double penalty save, a rapid Watford counter attack, a match winning goal, and a pitch invasion; not to forget Gianfranco Zola falling over, and a gloriously hysterical piece of punditry from the bloke on Sky Sports.
I challenge any team to produce a level of condensed drama to better that!!
