Book suggestions? Fiction or nonfiction?

I'm going on vacation tomorrow and I'd like to have a couple of books to read (on my kindle)

Fiction wise I'm not sure what I want. I downloaded Game of Thrones already but want something perhaps a little more...realistic I guess? Maybe something like "A Farewell to Arms" or WW2 related.

I'd also like a nonfiction book on current events. I don't know much about the world today so I want to know more. I'm interested in science related stuff like climate change or developmental controversies like the Key Stone Pipeline. However I'd like to stay away from things like An Inconvenient Truth b/c it sounds like it's riddled with errors from what I've been told...

Thanks!

Try The Bandit Queen of India, Ghost Wars, The Great War in Modern Memory, The Foreigner's Gift, or Empires of the Sand. All great non-fiction works.

I do not read much fiction.
