Does religion provide a predisposition to mental illness?

Aside from the fact that many people with psychotic disorders are very religious, there are many manifestations of religiosity which represent an unhealthy thought-process.

Religion is a socially acceptable version of having visions and grandiose thinking.

Religious people often talk to figures in their own mind.

Very religious people paint normal-life in 'supernatural' terms. For example they see political figures with whom they disagree as 'satanic'.

Religion inspires people to try and convince others of their very abstract and personal experiences.

I just think that mental illness is a much more common and sliding-scale part of our society, and I think religion has a long history of coralling such tendencies en masse in society.

So is religiosity a sign of the overall mental health of a people?

The reality is most mental health professionals have seen a correlation between religious belief and good mental health.. The religious seem better capable of coping with stress, handle adversity better, recover from the loss of a loved one more quickly and tend to have a more solid emotional support structure.

You clearly don't know much about mental illness. We don't see the insane building temples in honor of their affliction, or trying to convert others to their disease. They don't even form any sort of solidarity with others of their own disease, and tend to be loners. Also, people with the same disease will not have a consistent set of delusions, but all are different and again, alone in their madness. Further, mental illness tends to obstruct normal operation in daily life and generates depression and self harm.

Religious people, on the other hand, operate normally in society, holding down jobs and contributing to humanity in a meaningful way. Despite your unfounded claims, religion tends to promote thoughts of humility and charity among the faithful, and stresses success in academics or general work. It causes people to band together for a common goal and offers inclusion rather than loneliness.

Are you familiar with the "Three D's" of mental diagnoses? A mental condition must meet all 3 in order to qualify, and religion meets none of them.

Distress - the issue causes the patient or significant others distress.

Disability - the issue impairs the patient's ability to lead a normal life.

Deviation - the issue leads to deviant behavior (<10% of the pop exhibits it).

By the last one alone, atheism is a greater sign of mental illness than any religion. Did you know there are 1.2 Billion Catholics living in the world right now? What's your malfunction?

Yes, the billions of religious people around the world are insane and the only truly sane people are atheists. There, do you feel superior now?

I don't think Pastoral Counselors, Biblical Counselors, Christian Counselors would agree. The American Association of Christian Counselors and other such organizations wouldn't agree either. Faith based drug addiction program facilitators wouldn't agree and "Mediation" in court systems across the country wouldn't agree with you since the A.A.C.C.'s members hold a high percentage of the pre-trial positions in the court systems of the U.S.

Let alone Missionaries in third world nations proving free medical care, food and clean drinking water in those nations.

A Minister who solemnizes marriages, baptizes and officiates funerals, for example, seems pretty professional and in full control of his mind enough to provide such services no matter what little liberal kids think. Talk about mentally unstable huh? Atheists raising kids to be stupid enough to talk smack about people who provide such services?

Meanwhile counseling stats on atheists and their kids provides us with insight into their shared heroin addictions. The atheist parent usually gets their kid hooked on the deadly poison.

EDIT: I wonder how many U.S. Special Forces soldiers with the word "faith" in their creed are sickened by liberal rejects. Or how the folks over at http://www.persecution.org/ would feel about the liberal offspring of atheists calling what they do mentally ill?

Source(s): Think I'd check my facts before spitting out words just to see where they'll splatter if I were you.

No, because mental illnesses are involuntary imbalance states, whereas religion is a totally voluntary reinforcement of pure irrationality.

For a person in the academic world. I can assure you ; Your post lacks all 3 necessary components of thought

    1) you argue nothing (all feeling, unsupported, badly phrased)

2( You have no sources for your 'feeling'

    3) you show not even the most basic research has been done.

There is no thought in your post. None.

Consider that since everything that anyone would call 'religion' qualifies in your view, religion does not mean ANYTHING specific. You don't even grapple with whether reason says there is a God.

To me you are the typical uneducated, poorly-spoken bigot one meets at lower-class gatherings.
