Cop pulls over parked car?

A few years back I was dropping my boyfriend off at his house, (he lives in a rather sketchy part but I have gotten use to it), it was around midnight or so. My jeep was parked on side legally, I had my outside lights on the parking lights mode. This means my back red lights were on and so were my to yellow lights, not uncommon at all. These two cops pull next to me after I have been parked for like less than five minutes and one cop came to my window and the other to my boyfriends window. They asked both of us for our ID's and said what we were doing out there this late. I just said I was dropping my boyfriend off. They went to check our ID's and just told us that they just have to check cause of crime activity in his neighborhood. Did they have any right to do that? Like take both of our ID's even though my boyfriend wasn't driving. We didn't get a ticket or anything though I don't know why the h*** we would. I don't know what do you think about the whole thing?
