Why do people say "things will get better" when there is no proof?
I'm tired, lonely, suicidal. I've heard on here before "don't worry, things will get better" but where is the proof for that? Maybe people just lie so that they won't feel guilty if the person kills themselves; then they can say "oh well at least I tried".
Why would things suddenly get better when the pattern so far has just been loneliness followed by more loneliness?

It would appear everyone who has answered your question has never struggled with true depression before. People say things will get better because they don't know any better. They've never had depression.
I was seasonally depressed for 5 years before being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I can remember that feeling of Life = Sh** and it's so overwhelming that not a single thing is positive. It is physically and mentally impossible to overcome the negativity that surrounds you when you are depressed. I thought about killing myself many, many times. Whenever I didn't follow through I felt even worse about myself.
Idiots never understood where I was coming from. "Just think positive thoughts! Just exercise more! Just get a pet! Just switch jobs! Just go out with friends more! Just do something fun and mix it up! Just go do something for yourself!" Clearly they don't know how depression feels. You don't just snap out of it one afternoon on a whim. It doesn't work that way.
In your position right now, it's true that there is no reason for your life to get better. It's Newton's first law of motion. An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
You need an unbalanced force to help you change your life. That force can only be a doctor who prescribes medication and therapy to you. Or you could kill yourself, but that wouldn't actually change your life. It would just end it. That's not a viable option. You should make a doctor's appointment today.

Meaningful friendships are important but there are things that can hold you over if you're isolated until friends come along - pets and volunteer work. I don't mean cat or dog necessarily. You may be a hamster person. Sources for volunteer info - Yahoo! local, craigslist, volunteer match, Google, local papers, lists of tips for volunteers

When youre at the bottom of the hill, there's no other way to go except up.
You probably suspect things to MAGICALLY GET BETTER
NO!!!!!
DONT JUST SIT THERE AND WAIT FOR A MIRACLE!
Do something. Help people. Youre lonely? Tough, people literally don't have anyone, a roof over their head, or a meal at all. You are the luckiest person alive to some people. People love you and your too blind to see that. Things won't magically get better, you have to try. Help people to be appreciated and earn respect. Stop being a wus. You're awesome.

Because it's a known fact that when you look back on your life, you're far more likely to remember the good things than the bad. Furthermore, nothing is ever stagnant. People, moods, and situations change all the time.

Because.... you actually have to make a effort to make life better itself. things aren't going to just come to you and bam your happy. it doesn't work like that especially with depression. You think people just sit there and make millions of dollars? No, they actually work for it, they are performers or they are talk show hosts, they model. unless they won the lottery or something but yeah hard work brings success and sitting there will not change your life. You actually have to change your life, change what you do that makes you unhappy and TRY. when people say "Life will get better" Thats if your making the effort for it to get better, if not then it won't.
