Should i get a Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 or incline 6?
I am looking into getting a jeep and have come across the choice of a v8 or i6. Fuel economy does not matter to me but i am looking to take it off road and mudding and putting a lift and bigger tires on it. Witch engine would be better and which one would last longer.
Any comments will help

1999-2001's came with the non-TUPY 0630 head casting, but were upgraded through the model run or replaced, because they have all likely cracked by now. You can check the casting number on top middle portion of the head on the driver's side in front of the plastic cover that covers the wires for the injectors. Talking about that particular head is a little ridiculous right now, because your question is entirely too broad because Grand Cherokees have been made for 20+ years now.
If it's the 4.7L V8, I would opt for one with a 4.0L. If it's a Hemi V8 or Chrysler LA V8, I would opt for that vice the 4.0L and 4.7L.

The Jeep 4.0L Inline-6 is one of the most durable, long-lasting and rock-solid reliable engines you will find in any used SUV, period. It was designed and engineered by AMC (American Motors Company) and introduced in the 1987 Jeep Cherokee. Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, just to get Jeep and for the Grand Cherokee which was into development at that time. The Grand Cherokee was introduced as a 1993 model and the 4.0L I-6 was standard. It remained as the standard Grand Cherokee engine through the end of the 2004 model year.
I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo that my mom bought new in 12/1994. She drove it for nine years, then my step-dad used it to commute for six years before retiring it to 'extra car' status in 2009. They mentioned selling it but I told them I wanted to buy it if they decided to get rid of it. Instead, they gave it to me in 2010 and it has been my weekend vehicle ever since. It now has 282,000 miles on the original 4.0L and automatic transmission. It has never needed any major mechanical work and it still runs like a champ after 20 years!
One of the reasons that the 4.0L is still so popular is because it produces substantial amounts of torque at lower rpm. My JGC is just rear-wheel-drive, but it is very easy to bark the rear tires starting off from a full stop. The thing pulls like a locomotive and it would out-accelerate any comparable 6-cylinder SUV from the same ear.
The main things to watch for with the 4.0L is a tendency to develop oil leaks near and around the oil filter. The leak can be fixed pretty easily, but you never want the oil level to drop so much that the engine is starved for oil! Although it isn't very common, some 4.0Ls have developed overheating issues. Gone unchecked and/or unrepaired, overheating for a prolonged period is one of the few things that can seriously damage this engine.
The 1st-generaiton Grand Cherokee (1993-98) offered an optional Chrysler 5.2L V8 (just an updated version of the ancient 318 V8) and it was much more problematic than the 4.0L. If you get a 1998 or earlier model, go with the 4.0L Inline-6, trust me!
The 4.0L is also standard on the 1999-2004 Grand Cherokee, but a new 4.7L V8 became the optional engine for 1999. The 4.0L is still more than enough power for this model of Grand Cherokee, but the 4.7L V8 added some serious hustle. The 4.7L cut 0-60mph times by 2-3 seconds from the sub-10-sec time it takes the 4.0L to reach 60mph. The 4.7L V8 hasn't been as reliable as the 4.0L and it is a much more complex engine that costs more to repair over time!
Get the 4.0L and you'll be set!

The straight 6 is bulletproof. I have over 260K on my Grand Cherokee and I go from oil change to oil change with no additions. The tranny is also a beautiful piece of workmanship. Had it serviced once since owning it. Change the transmission oil and filter...period. I just wish that my Mercedes and BMW was that reliable.

Depending on the year almost always the 4.0. The 4.0 is practically a bulletproof engine. To get 300k out of one of these engines is not unusual. Thing to keep in mind is that Some Cherokee Sports, 00 and 01's, have bad heads. Poor casting from the factory causing them to crack. I have to assume this would include the 4.0's in Grand Cherokees in those years too.

off road I like the 6 , gust has more consistent lower end power . just depends on your 4x4 terrain .
