Better career move?

I am currently working full time third shift. Third shift didn't bother me that much until I had a child. Now I hate working third shift. And there is no opening for day shift where I work. So I'm going back to college to give me more choices. I have two choices. I am thinking about Medical Coding. Does anyone know if there are a lot of opportunities for working at home doing Medical Coding. My other choice is Medical Assistant. I have saw more jobs lately in my area for Medical Assistants. But I don't think Medical Assistant make as much money. Both these jobs would offer me better offers and shouldn't take much time for me to complete. Does anyone have any suggestions, or have any experience with either field?

You can also make income filling up online surveys. I am doing $1800/month by using this program: http://is.gd/myeasycash This can be a little boring employment nevertheless a lot better than working at KFC.

Working from home as a medical coder and biller is possible however it is not too likely. Not all medical coding and billing companies will allow their employees to work from home. Of the ones who do, you may need to work in an office for a few years and then you are allowed to work from home. There are some companies who only hire coders to work from home. A few of these are:

    Aviacode

    MAXIM Health Information Services

    Mayo Clinic

    Peak Health Solutions

    Kiwi-Tek

    Precyse

    The Coding Center

You may be able to find some more if you do some searching.

The average pay for medical assistants was $14.12 per hour in May 2012 (or $29,730 annually). Medical coders earned an average of $34,160 in May 2012.Another thing to consider is what each job does. Medical assistants may do some office work (answer phones, schedule appts, file, etc) as well as patient care (take blood pressure, weight, assist physician during treatments, prepare exam rooms). Medical coders sit at a computer entering codes to the patient's medical chart and assign dollar amounts to create the bill. You may need to do some insurance preauthorizations, answer billing questions, etc.

Both jobs take less than 2 years to complete training. You may not need training in medical assisting at all but you will need to see what employers are asking for. ABHES approves schools for medical assisting and AHIMA approves schools for medical coding. I would strongly suggest getting training through an approved school to ensure you go with a good one. There are more jobs out there for medical assisting. I would strongly suggest that if you go with medical coding, you also get an AHIMA certification after you complete your training. This will help you stand out among other applicants and AHIMA did a salary survey which showed that certified coders make more.
