As with any political philosophy, it has pros and cons. For me, it fits my views pretty well. It isn't perfect, but then finding a party with which we agree plank by plank is probably impossible. We choose the one that fits the best. Libertarianism fits me best.

An insidious, Orwellian movement backed by big money.

While on the surface, the idea may appear noble, a closer examination of the libertarian creed will find nothing but a thinned veiled defense of the idea of aristocracy for the XXIst century.

In a Libertarian world, we would all have the "freedom" to do whatever the guy with the most money says we have to do.

The absurdity can be fully contemplated with the following scenario: Imagine one man owns the entire Earth (a possible outcome of unchecked monopoly power). He decides to treat the rest of humanity as his playthings. Everybody else lives in shanty towns, works 16 hours a day in industrial era conditions and that one person racks in all the obscene luxuries from their labour that one could possibly imagine. This doesn't ruffle a "libertarian's" definition of freedom one bit. Something has to be wrong with that.

Libertarianism, from my vantage point, is pretty much akin to a third point on a triangle between modern day "liberals" and conservatives. In some ways, as a conservative, I actually regard libertarianism as a more serious challenger to conservatism than "liberalism." The reason for that is that when it comes to economic issues, there already is substantial common ground with conservatism, making the remaining differences stand out all the more. "Liberalism," by contrast, has little common ground with conservatism, so the differences are more numerous - and across the board.

the idea is good, but the problem comes when the government is blamed for almost all the wrong things happen. Yet libertarians will also say that they won't have to do business with corporations if they do not want to (when government is gone). The problem with that is anyone will do business with any organization that controls the issue of money and consumerism. As long as corporations remain unchallenged and checked, the same problems will be present.

government is not entirely bad...and some of the best economies and freedoms are found in socialist economies in Germany, Norway, Denmark, belgium and others

Most people who claim to be libertarians don't consistently follow libertarian theories to their logical outcomes.

You want no government, then who pays for everything? you take up a collection to pave the roads? you hire a private security force to patrol your subdivision? what if some of your neighbors won't pay up? you kick them out? how can you do that, since that would violate someone's freedom?

libertarians say that law enforcement is a legitimate aim of government, but which laws are acceptable? you can't legislate morality, supposedly, but laws against rape, theft, assault, and murder are based on moral principles. you have to pick and choose, and it violates someone's "freedom."

It's the most moral and most misrepresented political philosophy.
