Understanding download speeds?

Okay so im with TPG as my ISP and i live in sydney with a naked adsl2+ package, and i live roughly 4kms away from the exchange (cable distance) and based on speedtest results im getting :

Ping: 40ms

Download Speed: 3.72 Mbps

Upload Speed: 0.85 Mbps

I game, my brothers game and we all download and that connection is just simply to slow to support our needs. However my girlfriend lives on the other side of sydney, and her brother games and she can download a movie in 20mins while he is playing cod and will not get any lag. Im not sure as to what type of connection she could have because she has no clue. But she is with telstra as her isp and lives 4.5km away from her exchange (cable distance) so i asked her to run a speedtest and her results were:

Ping 8ms

Download speed 49.89mbps

Upload speed 2.23mbps

Which is insane. I checked if the NBN has been rolled out in her area and it hasnt. So she is certainly not on the NBN i just want to know what type of connection or service or plan or whatever its called could she have to gain those speeds? assuming her family doesnt pay a fortune for it.

Thank you :)

DSL that you have is transfered by very tiny coper wires and as such it can do only so much . I had DSL and speed was crappy . Luckily where I lived internet and phone company were one the same .So I complained that my phone calls are getting cut off and that I will cancel both internet and the phone .It turned out wires underground in front of the house got under water and got film of rust on surface hard to see if you do not take a really close look .I saw the crew come so I went out to check it out. They cut out rusted parts and reconnected wires and after that I got speed that was advertised .

Your girlfriend could be on cable which is thicker wire and of a newer date than phone wires so that might be reason that she gets better speed . If your modem is plugged into wall with tiny phone wires and her modem is plugged into 1/2 cm thick cable than she has better connection than you .

To answer your question, a more expensive one.

Network rates are measured in megabits, 1/8 of a megabyte. They are downloading at around 6megaBYTES a second, you are downloading probably around 400kilobytes/second.

You'll have to go onto your ISP's website and check to see if there's a better speed plan. It'll be a great deal more expensive, but the speed should be both reliable and wicked fast.

I had 2.5mbit speed before switching to comcast (from AT&T). We now get speeds of over 57mbits. It's not a cheap plan, but it's worth it. A 1gb download takes 2 minutes compared to an hour.
