Fellow atheists, how do you get through adversities?

I'm asking this because I need some answers besides my own for a meeting at my Unitarian Universalist church this evening. I've been through a great deal in my life and one thing (among others) I feel is necessary is not giving up.

What other thoughts do you have on the subject? What keeps you going?

Put things in perspective; looking up at the stars at night always helps me.

I have contempt for things which attempt to bring me down. There is a list of psychologically traumatic/stressful events which on average you are supposed to experience once every seven years. I went through a period in my life where I had 4 of those events happen over a 6 month time-span.

I am good at putting things in perspective. 4 years on, and I am in a much better place than I was.

Being fortunate enough not to ever have had to struggle with depression, I just look to the future and not worry too much about where I am now, since I can only control what I can control.

Some people aren't just lucky like me, and need more help (which I hope they seek). Counseling, medication, medical treatment, whatever they need...they shouldn't look down on themselves for needing help. If I ever struggle with depression, I'll have no problem with seeking assistance.

My friends and my family. There was a time after I came back from Vietnam when I was *really* messed up. But my girlfriend and best friend were there to help me get help, and then support me through it. That might not sound like a big deal, but those two were the greatest things that had ever happened to me up to that point. It meant a lot that they cared enough to support me through a hard time. I drew strength from them

    Dear Lord,

I admit that I am a sinner. I have done many things that don’t please you. I have lived my life for myself. I am sorry and I repent. I ask you to forgive me. I believe that you died on the cross for me, to save me. You did what I could not do for myself. I come to you now and ask you to take control of my life, I give it to you. Help me to live every day in a way that pleases you. I love you, Lord, and I thank you that I will spend all eternity with you. amen

reason ur life is living proof living without God to help u;[ur quote . I've been through a great deal in my life and one thing (among others) I feel is necessary is not giving up.

Here’s how the Bible actually puts it:

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal human beings and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

I have periods of mindless fun during the day to just flush the bad thoughts out of my system.
