I just started out a computer science major, and am considering minoring in it and doing IT as a major.

It all depends on how many great comp sci professors are at your school. For an example, I know many people who have had no programming experience before the intro class, and either did pretty well or did horribly bad. My school is not really know for its computer science program, and the professors are pretty terrible here. I've had little programming experience with a program called Scratch, which I loved, but it definitely did not prepare me for Java/the intro class.

So my advice is, if you're thinking about majoring in it, then take a pre-intro class (the class before the intro class). This is so you'd get an overview about what you're about to get into. See if you like it, and then take the intro class.

To sum everything up, you don't have to know a lot about tech to major in it. You can know nothing about tech and still do well. But you'd have to put a lot of determination into it - the courses are hard.

I don't think you should have to know a lot to major in it. You will start off with basic classes anyways and maybe even have the option to take a placement test. You really just need a strong passion for it and willing to learn the material.
