Where did "laughing on the other side of your face" come from?

When being "rebuked" for treating something as funny when it really isn't, my parents would say, "you'll be laughing on the other side of your face in a minute!"

It's occurred to me now that this doesn't seem to make sense. Does anyone know how this originated, and what it means?

Interesting question the expression existed in the 17thC and probably dates back to Ancient Greece.Janus a legendary figure in Greece had 2 faces on either side of his head.

The Phrase can be used as a threat or warning meaning stop laughing , because, you will regret it. Similar to He who laughs last, laughs longest.
