Where do I put my financial aid?

I will be first-time college student this coming fall.

I received my financial aid packet and I'm clueless as to my next steps.

Does the school give me a check now? Do I put the money in a bank account? Should I open up a bank account?

How does this work for most college students?

Update:

I will be attending university in Calirfornia.

You need to follow the instructions on your school's website for accepting your aid, signing an MPN if you are taking loans, and paying the balance if your aid is not enough. If your aid is more than needed to cover your expenses, your school will give you a refund according to their policies. That money is issued via direct deposit, to a debit card issued by the school, or by paper check depending on your school. You do not ever actually receive any money unless you are due a refund.

The college, depending on where you are going, will issue a debit card. It will have your name and the school logo. About a month into the semester, you will receive a refund (if you have anything left after tuition) and it will be put on the card. So, if this is for fall, you will not receive any money until September or later depending on your school. You didn't mention your state, but this is pretty much the norm for all of them.
