Can you be jealous without being envious?

People who are jealous think they own or should own the object of that jealousy. That's what it seems to me,anyway. I haven't ever had that feeling, so I don't really know.

Envious people would like to own the object. I had that feeling, one time. I did not like it, and so turned my attention to something else. It took some time, but I got past it.

The object of that envy was window washing. We both had 3rd story windows, she could afford a window washer every season, and those windows always sparkled. I, on the other had, had to hang off the window ledges on the third floor, and so, mine weren't always so sparkly. I didn't want to own her windows, or her window washer, but I did want always sparkling windows.

That's my thought, anyway.

Envy: I want the same as what they have

Jealousy: I want to take what they have as my own.

That's the way I see it anyway. You can have one without the other. For instance, I can be envious of my friend's wealth, but not feel jealous over it.

Yes, I believe it is possible. You can be jealous without envy, be channeling your jealousy into admiration, for the other person's accomplishments.

I see envy as focussed on material possessions.

While jealousy is targeted on status or reputation.

The terms are synonyms.
