Live in the south, but no southern accent?

I live in the south. A lot of people have a noticeable accent. I never really thought about it. People said i barely have one, but then the other day I got asked if i was even from the south cause i didn't sound southern.

When Im talking to others that aren't family like at work and such its almost like its not there. Then sometimes it seems to be more noticeable. Its like the more comfortable i am with talking to someone the more it sounds southern. Why is that?

Not everyone in the South has a "Southern accent" ESPECIALLY if they grew up watching television and their classmates and teachers didn't. Conversely, I know a woman who has a decided Southern accent, and it turns out she grew up in Alaska.
