it's like raising your hands at a rock concert, people do it because they're excited. People at church are excited for God :)

It is done to show praise and honor to God. Why do people wave their hands at concerts?

There is no proper purpose to it.
It is a custom adopted to pretend spirituality.
But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Nothing about raising your hands in church, or drawing attention to yourself, there.

The arms are outstretched not to appear like a satellite collecting a signal, but to reach out as if to embrace God; as if to hug God. It's a practice showing love to God. That's how I understand it anyway.
It does appear to be childish, but in a great way. We are his children who are doing that. That's what he calls us.
