Is this the most honest Christian you've ever heard of?
Several years ago I worked with a young man who was a Christian. He was also one of the friendliest, most thoughtful and imtelligent people I have ever known. One day during some down time at work we began discussing religion and he said "I understand why you're an atheist and I know that my belief in God isn't rational or logical but it feels right to me and makes me happy." No statements about having a personal relationship with his deity, no false claims of evidence that his particular deity exists, just an honest statement that it is an emotional belief that makes him feel good.
Why aren't more Christians honest like him?

Well there are good and bad atheists, there are good and bad people who believe in god, a rogue is a rogue and no god has ever changed that.
I do really like his sentiment in saying: "I understand why you're an atheist and I know that my belief in God isn't rational or logical but it feels right to me and makes me happy." - but isn't it a poor reason for belief? Simply put religion and its power to console someone doesn't make it true.

Well, it's unfortunate that you won't really find them on R&S. Thanks to the joy of getting to feel "anonymous" - which we all know is a joke.

nost people now go for a religion that makes them feel good, but that isnt a faith in God, That is why the snake charmers are so successfull in drawing people, it is is called charismatic.

the devil is hidden in the details. If the faith doesn't pass the tests, it's not true faith.

<< "I understand why you're an atheist and I know that my belief in God isn't rational or logical but it feels right to me and makes me happy.">>
That's one of the weakest reasons for belief in God.
<<Why aren't more Christians honest like him?>>
'Cause I would HOPE that their actual reasons for belief in God are stronger then an emotional appeal "feels right... and makes me happy"
Ever consider that his ACTUAL reasons for a belief in God were a bit more complex than that..but rather then make an effort to defend them - he said THAT - instead?
So maybe he was not being ENTIRELY honest.
You may presume he was being honest, because that fits a certain presumption or idea you have ABOUT theists. And because it reduces faith to the level of a personal opinion (which are easy to dismiss)
But it may not have been the sum total of his reasons for belief. -- So he may not have been that honest with you, after all.

My cousin basically says as much. He says that what I believe wouldn't give his life purpose so therefore isn't valid to him. My response is that I am more concerned with what is true than filling in my ignorance with god.

Because a very large number of vocal Christians aren't satisfied by the prospect of having their beliefs private. They're reliant on the praise of their peers; and the shunning of those who don't agree with them.
That means if you're a Christian, you're urged by those vocal Christians to do things to benefit and validate their views on their particular denomination.

Nope. I had a good friend who was a Southern Baptist preacher. He even admitted to me in confidence that he was just a salesman selling a product he couldn't actually deliver.
