We comfort each other with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4

16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

4:16 the Lord Himself will descend. This fulfills the pledge of Jn 14:1–3 (cf. Ac 1:11). Until then, He remains in heaven (cf. 1:10; Heb 1:1–3).

archangel. Very little is known about the organization or rank of angels (cf. Col 1:17). While only Michael is named as an archangel (Jude 9), there seems to be more than one in the archangelic ranks (Da 10:13). Perhaps it is Michael, the archangel, whose voice is heard as he is identified with Israel’s resurrection in Da 12:1–3.

At that moment (cf. 1Co 15:52, “twinkling of an eye”), the dead rise first. They will not miss the Rapture, but be the first participants.

trumpet of God. Cf. 1Co 15:52. This trumpet is not the judgment trumpets of Rev 8–11, but is illustrated by the trumpet of Ex 19:16–19, which called the people out of the camp to meet God. It will be a trumpet of deliverance (cf. Zep 1:16; Zec 9:14).

4:17 caught up. After the dead come forth, their spirits, already with the Lord (2Co 5:8; Php 1:23), are now being joined to resurrected new bodies (see 1Co 15:35–50); the living Christians will be raptured, lit. snatched away (cf. Jn 10:28; Ac 8:39).

This passage, along with Jn 14:1–3 and 1Co 15:51, 52, forms the biblical basis for “the Rapture” of the church. The time of the Rapture cannot be conclusively determined from this passage alone. However, when other texts such as Rev 3:10 and Jn 14:3 are consulted and compared to the texts about Christ’s coming in judgment (Mt 13:34–50; 24:29–44; Rev 19:11–21) at the end of a 7 year tribulation, it has to be noted that there is a clear difference between the character of the “Rapture” in that there is no mention of any judgment, while the other texts feature judgment.

So then, it is best to understand that the Rapture occurs at a time different from the coming of Christ in judgment. Thus, the Rapture has been described as pretribulational (before the wrath of God unfolded in the judgments of Rev 6–19). This event includes complete transformation (cf. 1Co 15:51, 52; Phil 3:20, 21) and union with the Lord Jesus Christ that never ends.

4:18 comfort one another. The primary purpose of this passage is not to teach a scheme of prophecy, but rather to provide encouragement to those Christians whose loved ones have died. The comfort here is based on the following:

    1) the dead will be resurrected and will participate in the Lord’s coming for His own;

    2) when Christ comes the living will be reunited forever with their loved ones; and

    3) they all will be with the Lord eternally (v. 17).

  • I'm pretty pumped about it. I'd love to see Him interviewed on CNN. Or Fox.

This is a matter of belief and faith. If you follow the Christian religion then I would imagine you would be ecstatic.

Unfortunately as EddieJ pointed out the whole concept is surreal, there isn't any substantial evidence to back up any religious beliefs. The prophecies of the bible are about as concrete as other religions/civilisations. For example, 2012 was supposed to be the end of the world and if you do a bit of research you will find countless predictions of Armageddon that have never come to anything.

Absolutely! Praise the Lord for his grace and mercy in waiting this long so that as many people as possible might be saved (2 Peter 3:9)...however, Lord come quickly and save us out of the muck and mire that this world has become!

I don't really believe in Jesus, but if I did believe in Him I'd be scared shitless at the thought of his return.

When he returns yes. You will not like it before though. Many shall be tested, let's not pray it comes soon. It will not be a pretty picture. I assure you that. There will be wars, there will be people dying of hunger and pestilence. It will not be good and many shall turn against God. Son against father. Fathers agains sons.

We are not being tested now.

I'll be praying after my generation has left. They will be suffering much.

Reading about a living hell is not the same as experiencing the living hell in the flesh.

Is it that time again? Usually you christians wait until we've had time to forget the last time you predicted he was coming and he didn't show up. I'm betting on the historic evidence that he hasn't put it in his day planner again.

No, it states in the bible he only came for the Jew of Israel and that he didn't come to bring peace but the sword.

I myself am Japanese, as such am what he would call a dog. I also am not one of his followers so I imagine when & if he returns I'll likely face some form of execution.
