Aithiests, have u ever heard of?

A religious man named "Marcion?" Marcion believed that Jesus God was not the God of the Israelite people, YHWH! I have thought this for years myself and overheard this persons name mentioned on the History Channel? So I googled it. Now I would not trust everything attributed to him, but, his main argument about the God of Israel carries a lot of wieght for he lived from 80AD to 160AD? And Jesus is said to have died in around 30AD?

This man must have had thousands and thousands of friends that believed in him, or he would have been killed off?

So who is the God of the Israelites then? According to Moses Exodus 20:20, he is the "Tempter!" "The God of War!" "The Jelous God!" "The unforgiven God, Exodus 34:7!" The God of the dead, that are living! Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!

So does this make those that serve him evil? Absolutely not! A person can only be evil if they do evil? The God of Israel gave the Israelites the Ten Commandments, and then said, either violate them or stay in a suffering state in the wilderness until u die? And after being there 40 years, watching thier Dads die, for refusing to kill the Canaanites, eating the same food everyday, hated, and feared, by nations around them, missing thier homes in Egypt, the foods they use to eat, and everything they had until Moses caused the Pharoah to make thier lives burdensome, they broke, and became willing to kill to ease thier suffering!

Dont blame his followers, blame him! Fear him! And behave as Jesus or u will meet him?

Heard about him in a documentary I watched once. Marcion was a believer in what is today known as the Albigensian heresy, the idea that the gods of the Old Testament and New Testament are two different gods. Which if you've ever read the book is like the most obvious thing ever.

No, I don't think gods exist and no I don't think the miracles attributed to him (or Jesus for that matter) actually happened. There's no such thing as magic. One of the accounts of Marcion says that he could perform miracles for example levitation. In the story he levitates to prove his point but when other Christians start praying he falls to the ground. Typical ancient fable.

Edit: Occulty - I thought the Albigensian and the Marcionite heresy were basically the same? Both realized the obvious, that the OT and the NT portrayals of god don't fit together at all.

Marcion is very well known. There were a lot of variations on Christianity in the early years, probably dozens more than we even know about. It took some centuries for the standard Christianity that we know today to crystallize and be regularized.

Why is this question addressed to atheists who don't believe in gods? You obviously don't want an answer.

Marcion was right about some things like you mentioned. Israel worshipped many false gods as well as at times worshipping the 1 true God.

The OT is unclear as to which gods are being referred to at times and is very confusing but it is certain this was a constant challenge as the true prophets constantly warn against these false gods.

The true prophets of God prophecied of Jesus arrival and were right so we do know the true God sent messages to Israel but was seldom listened to. This is why Israel was rejected by the true God in Isaiah 65.

As a former Christian college student who minored in history, yes. I'm aware of Marcion and what was considered "the Marcionite heresy."

Why is this question directed at atheists? We don't believe in God. I'm happy to answer your question if you have one, but it appears your only substantive question here is whether or not I've heard of the dude.

    These are not questions:

" his main argument about the God of Israel carries a lot of wieght for he lived from 80AD to 160AD? And Jesus is said to have died in around 30AD?

This man must have had thousands and thousands of friends that believed in him, or he would have been killed off? "

Yes, I am well familiar with Marcion. You need to read Tertullian. And this:

"Christian father Marcion of Pontus, 144 CE, claims all existing (second century) copies of Luke had been corrupted by Jewish interpolations, including Jesus being a Hebrew and circumcised at the Jerusalem temple—both, says Marcion, being lies. A fervent Christian, Marcion claims Jesus had no childhood, being zapped down to earth a full-grown man, and that Jesus was not crucified...." - No Meek Messiah page 45-46

    Yep.

He was considered a heretic by the Roman and Byzantine christians, and his writings were later rounded up and burned, many of his followers killed, by those same christians.

His theology was part of the motivation of the "orthodox" christian leadership to come up with a "canon" of scripture to counter his claims, and there's some evidence showing that "canon" (which is mostly what the NT is today) was specifically shaped and edited to counter Marcion and his ideas.

When Aithiests who know the Bible are confronted with questions to explian why they do not believe in God, usually they point out all the evil things that are contributed to the God of Israel? The way I have been lead to argue against the bad things of the God of Israel is, Jesus said he is not God, and he changed his commandments?

So When I read Marcion belief I just figured I would let those who dont like the God of the O.T. and therefore claim aithiesm, that Jesus did not like him either, and was killed by him?
