Being Honest asked in PetsDogs · 7 years ago

My dog is 7 years old how many more years does she have?

I have two rat terrier/chiwawa mix dogs. I've been having these dogs for 7 years and I'm 16, and I can't imagine living with out my babies. The reason I ask this is because ive noticed that they aren't as young as they used to be. One is skinny, getting a little gray hair and for years she was very mean but now she is like an cranky old lady, her name is courage and it does not fit her any more. The other dog has gotten fat and lazy , she is losing hair and a lot of it has turned gray and her name is puppy but she is far from a puppy. I love them with all my heart and want them to grow old with me not before me. I know I can't have them forever but how many more years will they live????

At least another seven years, provided he/she is healthy and doesn't get injured.

My pug is 8, a little grey around the face, and a total couch potato. He is not overweight, and I expect he's got another 5-8 years in him.

My terrier is two, has the beginnings of grey and is nowhere near as active as he was a year ago. I'll bet he goes another 12 years.

My min pin is just over a year, runs like a wild beast all the time enticing others to play chase. She's got the beginnings of grey on her chin. She'll easily go another 12-14 years.

No saying how long your dog will live, but average age for size is a good indicator. Probably better than trying to guess by their activity level.

Dogs usually live between 10-15 years, depending how fit they are. As you mentioned one is overweight and that could hinder him of having a long and healthy life. If you want them to live longer you should walk them for an hour or so. That could also help courage not to be grumpy or mean as both of those behaviours are not healthy for her. If you read a little about dog leadership, it could help you a lot and you will enjoy their remaining years even more. Walking will also bond you even more, more than playing or treats. Walking everyday is one of the most important things dogs and humans need to do. Remember with time and effort you can achieve anything you want. Even give you babies a longer life with you. It's in your hands.

The average way to look at this is that smaller dogs have longer life spans than the larger dogs.

They could live to be 14, 15 or 20 yrs. Depends on their health & genetic make up.

  • That size dogs should live to 12+ on average, although no guarantees ever sadly, mid teens isn't uncommon.

However you should be seeing a vet, small dogs aren't even classed as mature until around 8, crankiness and weight loss are potential indicators of something underlying.

Same with your fat one. Weight loss and increased activity is an idea, but do discuss with the vet first. Is it possible she's stealing food? Ultimately you may need to check on her food intake and give her extra exercise.

Not a bad age for a real check up if needed!
