root canal infection?

Beginning of last month I had a root canal. Prior to it the infection on my gum was about the size of my pinky finger nail. Afterwards it went down pretty fast to about a quarter of the size, then it stopped. I got antibiotics for 5 days and it went away. Then 3 days after I stopped a tiny white pimple like bump appears. Lasted about a day then vanished. A few days after that it came back, and was gone by morning. Any ideas? The dentist is giving the wait and see approach

That's a fistula that formed before the root canal was done. The dentist is hoping your body will fill in the bone that was destroyed by the bacteria trying to find a channel out of it (closest way is usually through the gums). It may not heal, and you will lose the tooth eventually. When a tooth has a fistula before a root canal, the root canal therapy has less long-term success because there is usually a small channel for reinfection left.
