He was having a private conversation at a restaurant when someone overheard him. Do public officials have less rights that civilians or more responsibility (or both)? Does his utter lack of remorse make you feel better that he has resigned in disgrace? If you hate Obama enough, is it okay to say whatever you want about him?

Of course he had the freedom to say it, which is why he was not prevented by any law from doing so nor was he arrested for what he said.
But people use bad judgement and say things that get them fired all the time. Why should a racist be any different?

He was an elected official. The people he represents want him out.
No one has ever said he didn't have the right to his opinion.
However, it was in poor taste and offensive.

He has the right to his own opinion and the right to share it with the world and is under no obligation to resign just because he is a jerk.
