if a battery leaks, can it still work?

if a battery leaks, can it still work? i opened my remote control and inspected the batteries. the batteries seemed still intact and fine but i stuck my finger inside the battery compartment and tiny white specks appeared and i looked at one end of the battery and saw like a little bit of white specks but it didn't seem like it leaked. was it just debris? if a battery leaks and the acid dries out, can it still work? i'm like OCD right now because i didn't wash my hands after touching it because i didn't think it was battery acid but now I'm starting to wonder and freak out a bit. LOL can someone relieve me right now please?

If the batteries have started to leak, it's best to replace them immediately.

They can damage the battery enclosure, preventing the remote from working even with fresh new batteries.

Remove the batteries and dispose of them as required by your city's garbage policies. For instance, mine say to put dead batteries in a plastic bag and put them out with the recyclables.

Next, use a damp paper towel or cloth to clean out the battery enclosure. Be sure to clean off the metal contacts where the batteries go. Finally, wash your hands in cool soapy water.

Leave the cover off the remote and let everything air-dry before putting in fresh batteries.

If you don't plan on using the remote for more than a few weeks, remove the batteries.
