Is there anything I can substitute for miso paste?

I searched on here and found lots of answers but they seemed to be all about miso soup. I need miso paste and I can't get it in my rural area. I know I can order it online but I have some gorgeous salmon and really want to make Bobby Flay's miso and ginger marinated salmon. It calls for 1/4 cup of white miso paste and miren. I have a suitable miren substitute but don't know about the miso paste. My mother in law is Asian but isn't available right now. Help!

    There is really no substitute but if you just need a small amount for a recipe I have heard you can try substituting sesame paste or tahini.
