Why is weed illegal?

I know in some states like California and Denver laws have loosened up but why is alcohol and cigarettes perfectly legal when they caused so many deaths? Is it because they can't make as much money with weed since it can be home grown??

I believe the Pharmaceutical companies along with the DEA (A branch of the government) will see a great loss, The Drug companies have a monopoly going on and they know if it were legal then people (Like myself) Would stop taking prescription meds that have many nasty side effects instead of a natural alternative, Also the DEA would be effected and also the court systems. My Nephew got screwed for life after being caught with a bit over an ounce on Illinois and is a felon because of this preposterous war on drugs that the US is losing, It's costing more than it's bringing in, Why can't they worry about bigger things than this?

Repubs have this weird fear that if they make weed legal everyone will smoke it which is funny because alcohol and tobacco are legal and not everyone uses them.
