Travel with dog to Asia by air? (long flight)?

Hello, I'm planning my trip this summer. And I wonder if anyone have brought their pets with them oversea by air? I'm going to Thailand, or China, or Vietnam. I've checked with EVA airline and it is okay, they do provide that type of service. Mine is a German Shepherd and he is not on the prohibited list fortunately (They have a list of dog breeds that are not allowed to travel).

My concern: the flight is very long, about 17 hours, I'm worried if the dog will be okay.

Thank you very much for all your inputs :)

Flying with your dog, especially during summer, can be very dangerous. Even healthy dogs die. If you can have someone watch him while you go, it's just going to be the better option. Many airlines won't even allow you to fly with your dog during the summer. Then there are sometimes weird quarantine laws that you need to look into.

I assume you are saying you want to send him in the baggage area. If you have a very small dog you can keep them with you in the cabin. This is much less dangerous. Your dog probably wouldn't be hurt from this, but it would still suck for him to not per for such a long time.

I flew my dog to Hawaii because I had to move. They didn't feed him or water him for over 14 hours, despite the fact that they said they would. Luckily it was late fall, so it wasn't too hot.

Honestly though, it would probably be best just to find someone to watch him for you.

    Edit

I just noticed that you said German shepherd. It is not safe for him to travel in the baggage area during the summer. He really could die. And where are you going to keep him on your vacation?

Traveling in the baggage compartment of a plane is really stressful for an animal. Unless you were moving there permanently, it really is not worth the difficulty. You wouldn't be doing this for the dog- you'd be doing it for your own comfort at having your dog with you. But it doesn't sound like you have any arrangements for the dog once you get there, and you really CAN'T have a dog with you in hotels or on the streets. Unless this is a guide dog, do the dog a favor and leave him home.

    Are you crazy!!

You don't try to take any dog, let alone one the size of a german shepherd, to any of the three countries you mention - and that assumes that they would let it in anyway.

You obviously have no concept of life outside of whatever cozy nook you inhabit in the USA.

    Just plain don't try it.

Even if, just even if, you were to take the dog into those countries, where on earth do you think that it will stay, eat and poop while you are there. No hotel or guest house will let you anywhere near.

What are you going to do, walk it around the streets of Bangkok, Shanghai or Ho Chi Minh. I think that it is illegal to try that and besides, have you never seen a dogfight - the local animals will be on yours in a pack in seconds if you are in the smaller towns.
