Is PDF an acceptable format to send to a printing service for high quality signage?

I've been asked to convert some logos into vector format, and often send them to my client in PDF so that he can view them and approve them. The logos are to be put onto high quality signage (billboards, banners, etc).

Since the PDF files contain the vectors, is this an acceptable format for printing services or should I submit it as another format such as EPS or AI?

If indeed generated from scalable vector graphics and not from a bitmap scan the pdf should be technically adequate for print maters. It may be most a matter of printer policy or capability, Certainly printers would prefer an editable file format in the case last minute edits or simple typo corrections are needed.
