The tv makers keep trying to come up with something new now that HD tvs are mainstream and cheap, so a few years ago they tried 3D, big flop. Now curved tv, future flop. They just keep trying.

if you are referring to old school CRT TV's, then it is because they used a 'gun' in the middle that fires a signal at the back of the screen.
It is best that the length of this signal remains constant over the entire surface of the screen. Obviously, the edges of a flat screen would be further from the centre than the middle, so they make the screen curved so that the distance from any point of the screen to the 'gun' is the same.
