Do Japanese people get a shock from different countries perspective of recent history?

Just a disclaimer, I'm not trolling. I'm generally curious how the Japanese feel about different perceptions of the war and their role in it. From what I have understand Japanese kids are taught a very different kind of war history than Western countries.

Feel free to comment even if you're not Japanese. Maybe you've been to Japan and talked about it or read/heard a lot about this subject.

I'm Chinese and we think that the Japanese government is really screwed up when it comes to whitewashing war crimes. The Chinese media likes to report on how the Japanese president is still visiting temples honoring kamikazes. Chinese people generally think that the Japanese people are very nationalistic and have huge egos, but hey, we also think of them as polite and well-mannered.

Ya, I know that my avatar is an anime character, but hey, being a fan of anime is a different concept.
