Determine caloric value to human being of an ingested lump of sugar?

My physics prof. gave me a quiz where it says in one of the problems that,

Please explain why it is possible to determine the caloric value to a human being of an ingested lump of sugar, by doing a laboratory experiment.

    In physics, you use a calorimeter to do that, basically you burn it and see how much heat it releases. Keep in mind that the calories we count in food are more like kilo-calories. Of course, us diabetics know that there are 4 grams of carbohydrates in an individual package of sugar which amounts to about 16 dietary calories which is about 16,000 physics calories.
