Would an isolationist government/president work in modern day America?

I've always been a fan on an isolationist government, but I don't think it's possible with us being the UNs Police and all but, what are your thoughts? Why or why not?

It would work....for the US...for a while. But it would be a disaster for the world as despots of all kinds could crawl out from under their rocks and run wild. However, what goes around, comes around. The US would have to face the consequences of it's isolationism eventually. WWII was a consequence of world isolationist attitudes formed after WWI. If this had happened after WWII, we might all be speaking Russian now.

    Isolationism...nyet!

Didn't work with Afghanistan, did it?

Didn't work in Somalia, did it?

Didn't work in Germany did it?

How'd that hands off China policy work out for Pearl Harbor?

Leaving problems to fester with no attempt to lance the boil has led to multiple problems in the past.

It is just plain silly to pretend that there aren't ways to act on the world besides pretending it does not exist. The UN is cheaper than the alternatives.

Isolationism is a fantasy for people scared by a modern world.

The answer is this: Barack Hussein Obama himself is an isolationist, except when it comes to enabling and funding the Terrorist Organization called the "Muslim Brotherhood" around the globe, and enabling and funding terrorism in Syria, etc, etc, etc, etc.

i think it would be much too dangerous. the US Navy is the force that creates free navigation on the world's oceans. and your first world life style depends on that free navigation.

imagine what happens if some other government uses its navy to extract a 30% toll on all ocean shipping within its reach. Pay or be sunk.

the trading world would shrivel up and die -- like the Great Depression.

you'd probably lose your job. at least once in the ensuing few years.

and that's before the world's bullies take over so many other countries that they feel they can come after you.

The world is more interconnected now than ever before, economically, technologically, and politically. It would be a grave disservice to the U.S. to have a government that didn't want to interact with other countries. Even trying it seventy years ago was a mistake. Our isolation and refusal to take part in world events contributed to WWII and it's aftermath.
