Which E-reader Do I Buy?

Yes, the generic question of which kindle or nook to buy. I'm sorry, I just want one that will do what I need. I've google searched to no avail. The thing is, I really want one that you can use in the sun, but can also do web browsing. I don't need anything else. I'm kind of an Americanized-otaku, and there are a bunch of books out there that are only translated on the Internet, so....yeah. Does that exist yet or do I need to wait?

    You have 2 issues...

    1. You want to read in the sun.

eInk is perfectly readable in sun - eink is lit by room light and the sun and even the least expensive (like $70).Kindle or Nook ereader can be read int eh sun. eInk cannot be read in the dark or in dim lit unless you get a model with adjustable built-in front-lighting like Kindle Paperwhite or Nook Glowlight.

I don't know if the Nook ereaders have a browser. So far the Kindle ereaders do have a browser but the least expensive Kindle does not have a touch screen so it would be very clumsy to browse (no tap to type keyboard - you have to cursor around and pick characters).

Things you cannot do on a Kindle or Nook eInk reader: video, animation, audio. eInk is a slow low-power-use display for reading. You CAN do those things (videos, audio, real games) on a color tablet BUT color tablets are not very readable in bright sun.

    2. You can only browse if you have a Wifi signal

So if you are in the sun, you would have to be very close to a Wifi network that you know the WEP/key for (like maybe right outside your house you MIGHT get a WIfi signal if your home has Wifi)

The expensive Kindle Paperwhite 3G can use free cell 3G anywhere but only to buy/download ebooks from the Kindle store and maybe to search Wikipedia. The browser can only be used on Wifi.

If you have a need to browse ANYWHERE then you need to buy a portable hotspot to provide your own Wifi network wherever you go and you will have to pay a cell phone data contract for that (probably at least $30/mo). Or you can buy a color tablet model that has built-in cell phone hardware, pay a $30/mo or more data contract for it, and it wont be very readable in the sun because color tablets are backlit LCDs.

I have a Kindle Fire HD which I think is very good.

Hopeless for games in the sun but works ok for reading.

Just turn on reading view and you a white background with black text.

    Great indoors on all fronts.
